New Year and Big News!

Wow, its 2014 already? What a year this is shaping up to be.  2013 was such a freaking kick in the head (to be honest, so was 2012) They were both rollercoaster years with extraordinary highs and devastating lows…but 2014 is looking good.

Health issues appear to be behind me which gives me a shiny new lease on life.  Sooooo, 2014? Well, I just found out that I won, not 1 but 2 of the Reader’s Choice Awards at GayAuthors.  I’m thrilled.  I keep looking at the sparkly awards and think they are going to call me at any moment and say it was all a mistake, that they want their awards back! LOL

I’m working on finishing my story "Pour Me Another"  It was my main project for 2013 until I got sick and couldn’t work on it.  I have 2 chapters ready, but I’m not going to post until it’s complete to make sure there are no more interruptions.

2014???

((Scratch my chin))

I’ve got so many writing ideas bouncing around my crazy mind, where do I start?

-          College Prostitution Ring

-          Supernatural Games of Life/Death

-          Young Adult Trilogy

Also:

-          Re-writing “The Secrets of Pimsim Cove”

-          Re-writing “Chasing the Shadows”

(Considering Independent Publishing with both these stories)

Wherever this year leads me, I’m just excited to be here.  I’m also going to dabble at some gardening once the weather warms up and also trying to put together a mountain bike ride/vacation.

Well, that’s my big plan! I will keep you guys updated on what projects I’m working on as they progress so check back soon.

"A Roommate Wanted" ~ Book 4 in my "Bump in the Night" Short Story Collection

Wow, I can’t believe we are almost to the end of my short story collection.  5 pieces of erotic flash fiction.  It has been so much fun writing these short bites of fantasy.  They are very quick and packed with a punch.

Blurp:
With the downturn in the economy, everyone is struggling to make ends meet. Looking for someone to split the cost of living, Jordan places an ad for a roommate. The words fell in place: Incredibly Neat & Clean, Unfurnished Bedroom Unit Suite -- Roommate Wanted.

What’s the worst that could happen? The new guy could turn out to be a slob or an obsessive online gamer, but Jordan never imaged his new roommate would be the man of his dreams.

Sebastian is gorgeous. He’s tall, dark, and devilishly handsome. Once Sebastian moves in everything changes for the better. Could this be a match made in heaven? Or will Sebastian’s devilishly good looks be the death of Jordan?

NOTE: This story won the 2011 Readers' Choice Award for Best Anthology Story at GayAuthors.org.

EXCERPT:

(Note: may contain sexually explicit scenes of a homoerotic nature.)

Jerking the door open with as much force as he could, Jordan yelled at the stranger standing in the hallway. “What do you --”

The guy’s dark eyes opened wide as he pulled away from the door.

“Oh my God,” Jordan’s pale face immediately flushed bright red. Noticing that the guy had taken a second and third step back, Jordan needed to stop him before he turned tail and ran.

“I’m sorry if I’m --” The guy tried to apologize, but Jordan quickly stepped into the hallway with him.

“No, I’m sorry! I thought you were the old lady who lives below me,” Jordan tried to explain.

He gave Jordan a curious glance.

Shit, that didn’t come out right. “No, what I mean is, I thought she was coming up to complain about the noise. I was moving some furniture around.”

“That explains why you didn’t answer the door the first two times I knocked.” His voice was so deep and sexy.

Jordan felt his heart rate double, sending all of his blood straight to his dick. “I-I-I ... uhmmm,” he stuttered for a second before taking a breath to steady his nerves. “I must not have heard you knocking.”

Stepping back into the apartment, he was glad when the guy followed him inside, instead of running away.

“I’m Sebastian,” he said, holding out his hand. “The room is still available, isn’t it?”

The skin of their fingers touched in a casual handshake. It should have been nothing, a simple touch. So why did it feel more erotic then an all-night bender watching gay porn?

Jordan nodded his head, afraid that he would start stuttering again like an idiot or say something really embarrassing.

Sebastian’s skin was a dark color, unlike anything Jordan had ever seen. It wasn’t quite brown or even a dark olive tone, it appeared to be ... almost ... red. The light shimmered on his face and bare arms. His fingers itched to touch him again.

Clearing his throat, Jordan asked him, “Would you like to see the room?”

With each passing full moon, the werewolf inside Bryson becomes harder and harder to tame. If the beast gets free, it'll be impossible to pen back in. Control is an illusion and Bryson knows once he loses it, nothing will ever be the same.

The call of the moon is powerful, but Bryson need relief. A dark, secretive bar called the Iron Side is a place where anything goes, a place for anonymous satisfaction for men by men. Bryson’s plan is simple -- get in, get laid, and get out, but the plan changed once he saw the man of his dreams. He is, in a word, beautiful. Bryson never wanted someone so much.

Can Bryson have a one-night-stand with this handsome stranger and just walk away? Will he be able to to his life as a lone wolf knowing this man was still out there?

Projects for 2013

Since we are one month already down in 2013, I figured that I need to update readers to what I have up my sleeves for this new year.

Like everyone else, I’ve been busy busy busy, which is good, but sometimes very stressful.  There has been a lot going on in my personal life, but I’m trying to focus on my writing.

First, I would like to thank everyone who voted for my stories on GayAuthors.org

To be nominated in 3 categories is amazing. “Shepherd’s Crook” and “Take Me Home Tonight” are both up for 2012 Reader’s Choice Awards. If you haven’t checked out GA, swing by and take a look. It’s always nice to connect with new readers…(psssssst, there is still time to vote too! Voting closes February 23, 2013)

I’m participating in the 2013 OOH Screenwriters Competition this year. I’m very excited. Screenplays are so much fun to write. I’ve participated in years past, but missed last year due to my Mom passing away. My Mom was a dancer and a huge supporter of the performing arts. I know that she is shining down on me as I work on an adaptation of my short story: “Destiny’s Diner” for this year’s competition.  Wish me luck!

Also, another big announcement, my collection of short supernatural stories is being published by JMS Books. “Bump In The Night,” will be 5 erotic stories that are hot and steamy. Yes, they are erotic gay flash fiction.  I love the idea of hitting a story fast and furious, head on without missing a beat.

The release dates for 2013 are:

Book 1 - Lone Wolf ~ March 10
Book 2 - Fate Drops In ~ April 28
Book 3 - When Darkness Falls ~ May 19
Book 4 - A Roommate Wanted ~ June 2
Book 5 - The Prey ~ June 16

Let’s start small and work it bigger…shall we? LOL

I’ve written 2 stories for GA’s 2013 Quarterly Anthologies.

“Let The Music Play”-  For the Spring 2013 Anthology theme: “A Night To Remember”.  This story will be an unexpected treat for you. It’s a romantic lesbian love story. It was written for one of my friends who has been begging me to write something for her. I hope she likes it, and I hope you do too!

Next is the Fall 2013 Anthology theme: “Pandora’s Box.”  I don’t have a working title yet, but this story is defiantly a tasty piece of flash fiction about a young man embarking on a wild new adventure.  It should be fun in all the right ways.

Now let’s get to the biggest project that I’m working on at the moment, “Pour Me Another.”  I’m really loving this story!!!

It’s going to be about 50,000 words and is a modern day romance.  It is sexy and romantic, heartbreaks and heroes.  It’s hard to not give too much away.  I’ve been working on it for months.  The plans I had for this story fell through, so I’m not sure what to do with it now. It’s more than 2/3rd finished. I had kind of put it on the backburner when plans, outside of my control fell through, sooooo what do I do with it now?

I’ve tossed around the idea of self-publishing it, finding another venue or shopping publishers? What are your thoughts?  What do you think I should do? I want to hear from you… Let me know!

Thanks for reading and supporting my work.  I will keep everyone update of new projects as the come up.

Thanks,

KC

Negative Book Reviews

Any author that believes every one of their story reviews will be positively glowing… is totally delusional!  Every writer gets their share of bad reviews, Stephen King, Dean Koontz, and even well-loved Nora Roberts have gotten terrible reviews over the years.  How have these famous authors learned to deal with someone trashing a story they have worked so very long and hard on? Ignore it? Have a good chuckle then get back to work?  Track down the reviewers IP address and upload a computer virus (I’m just joking)

The anonymity of the internet also makes people bolder, speak louder and say things that the probably wouldn’t say if they were standing in public.  The way I look at is there are 500,000- maybe a 1,000,000 books in a bookstore (depending if it’s brick/mortar or online.) Not every customer is going to love every one of those books, plain and simple.  That’s the beauty of there being a vast number of different genre’s and topics.  We don’t all like the same stuff.

Before you chose to attempt to shred someone’s hard work, just stop and think for a moment.  If you hated it from the first pages, then why the hell did you continue to read?  Self-torture?  Was it fuel for your fire to back your harsh words?  Is your goal to really attempt to sway other readers away from a book, like they are mindless sheep and can’t form an opinion of their own? Or last, are you a failed author that is so upset at the literary world that you review all stories with disdain and contempt?
I write mostly erotic gay fiction.  It’s not Pulitzer Prize material, nor is that my goal!  (LOL) My stories are fun and sexy, usually deal with coming out or opening up with new sexuality, they are light hearted and a little quirky.  If that’s not up your alley, guess what…you have about a million other books to choose from!
My mother taught my siblings and me a very important life lesson that I think a lot of people haven’t learned: Praise in public, criticize in private.
Happy Reading!!

Endings and New Beginnings

Yep, it was my birthday this weekend.  The first since my mom passed away.  It was hard knowing that she’s never going to be there for another special day in my life.  39…the last birthday before turning 40…Wow!  This is the end of my thirties.  It’s went by so fast.

When I started this decade, I was still trying to find myself.  I had made major changes in my life that affect me and my family.  I was scared that everything that I was doing was wrong, but now as I finish this time in my life and look towards what is to come, I feel more confident than I did years ago.
Yeah, sometimes life is a pain in the ass.  Things often go astray.  Goals don’t always get accomplished, but I know who I am and what direction I’m moving in.  At least that’s a start.  I have a wonderful family and great friends.  Here is a toast to another year, now blow out the candles before someone calls the fire department! LOL

Halloween

With having Halloween this week, I found myself reflecting on the holidays of the past.  My kid is growing up and we finally had to have that discussion about being too old to participate in Trick-or-Treating.  She still attended a teenage Halloween party and had a blast, but we decided it was best to leave the door-to-door festivities to the younger children.
She and her best friend went to the party dressed as zombies (personally, I think she looks like Beetlejuice! LOL)

Devil's Backbone

Yesterday was a lazy Saturday afternoon.  We had already finished our commitments and were driving home when my husband gave me a wrong turn.  I love him, but honestly the man has the worst sense of direction ever.  Quickly realizing the error, I looked for a place to turn around, but major construction on the highway led us further out into the country.  We had already eaten lunch, had plenty of gas and a few snacks so I figured, let’s make this into an adventure.
The autumn foliage was beautiful. The last leaves clinging to the trees shimmered with radiant golds, rustic reds, and warm oranges.  We pasted fields of harvest corn and wheat and farm animals and old turn of the century homes until we stumbled upon “The Devil’s Backbone.”

A breathtaking river that ponds before cascading over a waterfall.  It was breathtaking.  We stopped and walked the length of the trail beside the river. We watched the geese play in the water. It was perfect.  The last few months have been very trying.  I’ve struggled with depression and overwhelming sadness, but this place was so beautiful and it was nice to enjoy with my family.  It was unexpected and very welcoming escape from our crazy life.
Sometimes when life hands you a wrong turn, maybe it was the direction you were supposed to take in the first place, you just didn’t know it yet.

Field of Screams

I’m so excited! I can hardly sit still to write this!!!

Tonight we are going to ‘Field of Screams’ which is a haunted house attraction with a frightmare asylum and a haunted hayride.  I’m such a horror junkie.  I love scary movies and ghost stories, but to get my heart racing and blood pumping in the real life experience…well I’m excited to say the least.

We are also taking our teenage daughter and her best friend with us.  At first, I was concerned about my kid being so scared out of her mind that she’d end up sleeping in our bed for the rest of her life, but then I realized what a perfect cover it would be. Two teenage girls? I have someone to blame my girly screams on tonight! “What girly sniveling, sobbing screams of terror, Sir?” It wasn’t me! (Point to the two girls)

I’ve been slowly getting into the Halloween spirit.  The house got decorated last week like I promised.  So what about you, what is the scariest thing you have done to get that sensational feeling of being scared?

Spooktacular Time of Year!

Well as we are fast approaching Mid-October, I sit here watching the wind blowing the golden yellow-orange and fiery red leaves from the trees outside my window.  They flutter to the ground and swirl around in a beautiful, colorful flurry.
The trees have decorated my house for what should be a festive time year, because I haven’t.  Normally by this time, I would have pumpkins up, spider webs, my famous glow-in-the-dark footprints tracking across the front lawn…but I don’t.  I haven’t done anything spooktacular at all.

I’ve had a hard time getting into the Halloween spirit this year.  I usually love decorating for Autumn.  It is my favorite time of year, but since my Mom passed away a few months ago, I’ve been having such a hard time finding the joy in the simple things that use to bring me such pleasure.  Everyone keeps telling me that it will pass.  The first year after losing someone is the hardest.  Those first holidays and special dates are the most painful without them.

Today, I’m going to decorate! I’ve committed to it and I’m going to do it.  I know my husband and our child have been worried about me and they have tried not to push me, but my hiding away from the world is hurting them too.  As soon as I finish posting this, I’m gonna dig out the boxes of ghoulish decorations.

So, what is your favorite Halloween decoration? What is the one thing that you are known for doing to make your haunted home the most frightful house on the block?  Share with me your decorating tips as I try to jump back into the Halloween spirit.
